The Covid-19 pandemic impacted both domestic and international migration patterns. This briefing is intended to provide a summary of pre-pandemic domestic migration relating to London, to provide a baseline against which new data can be compared.

The Office for National Statistics provide annual data on internal migration moves into and out of each local authority in England and Wales, and for this report we used the data for the year ending mid 2020 that were released in June 2021.

Number of in-migrants, out-migrants and net migration for London between 2002 and 2020.

Data are plotted in Section 2 of the briefing.

Destination local authorities (England and Wales) of migrants from London.

Numbers of migrants are adjusted for population of the receiving local authority.

Data are plotted in the first chart of Section 3 of the briefing (OUT-MIGRATION)

Origin local authorities (England and Wales) of migrants to London.

Numbers of migrants are adjusted for population of the origin local authority.

Data are plotted in the second chart of Section 3 of the briefing (IN-MIGRATION)

Net migration for London w.r.t. non-London local authorities in England and Wales.

Numbers of migrants are adjusted for population of each local authority.

Data are plotted in the third chart of Section 3 of the briefing (NET MIGRATION)

In-migration, out-migration and net-migration by five age groups for all local authorities (England and Wales) with respect to London's domestic migration.

Numbers of migrants are adjusted for population of the local authority.

Data are plotted for each age group in the five maps of Section 5 of the briefing.

Area-based classification for all local authorities in England and Wales.

The classifications are mapped in the fourth chart in Section 4 of the briefing.

Domestic migration from London, categorised by age group of migrants and characteristics of the destination local authorities (England and Wales) using the ONS "Area Classification" scheme.

Data are plotted in the first chart of Section 4 of the briefing (OUT-MIGRATION)

Domestic migration to London, categorised by age group of migrants and characteristics of the origin local authorities (England and Wales) using the ONS "Area Classification" scheme.

Data are plotted in the second chart of Section 4 of the briefing (IN-MIGRATION)

London's net domestic migration, for non-London local authorities (England and Wales) categorised by age group of migrants and characteristics of the local authorities using the ONS "Area Classification" scheme.

Data are plotted in the third chart of Section 4 of the briefing (NET MIGRATION)

Domestic migration for each London borough. Numbers of migrants are adjusted for population of each borough.

Net migration data (difference between in- and out-migration) are mapped in Section 6 of the briefing.

Migration flux data (sum of in- and out-migration) are mapped in Section 7 of the briefing.
