Labour market update for London – November 2015

Latest figures show continued high levels of employment and low levels of unemployment

Latest figures continue to show a buoyant labour market in London. London’s employment rate (i.e. the proportion of London’s resident working age population in employment) in the three months to September 2015 increased to 72.4 per cent – up by 0.2 percentage points on the previous quarter (unchanged on a year earlier). Similarly, London’s unemployment rate remains low – in the three months to September 2015 it stood at 6.4 per cent. This is down 0.2 percentage points on the previous quarter although it is up 0.2 percentage points on the year. Another sign of London’s buoyant labour market, is illustrated by its inactivity rate (that is the proportion of all those aged over 16 who are not in employment and not looking for work); London’s inactivity rate in the three months to September 2015 was 31.8 per cent (this rate was around 35 per cent in 2007).
