Energy Efficiency

On average, private sector homes in London are less energy efficient than affordable homes, reflecting national differences. Energy efficiency has, however, increased considerably across all tenures in London over the last 20 years. Almost nine in ten homes in London fall into energy efficiency band D or better, up from just three quarters over a six year period. This does vary considerably by tenure, however, with owner occupied dwellings the least energy efficient on average.

Much of this difference can be attributed to the type and age of the housing stock in each tenure – Housing Association homes are generally newer and more likely to be flats and therefore more energy efficient, whereas owner occupied homes tend to be older and are more likely to be detached or semi-detached homes, which are usually less energy efficient.
