Unemployment Rate

Unemployment rates in London have tracked a little higher than those for the UK overall, standing at 5.9 per cent and 4.5 per cent respectively for 2020, with the pandemic reversing several years of decreasing rates, and having a larger impact on the overall unemployment levels in London than across the UK as a whole. However, these overall figures mask some large differences between sub groups of the population.

Unemployment rates have been lowest among White women, White men and Indian men, with the highest rates are among women from Pakistani and Bangladeshi ethnic groups. However, unemployment rates have risen most notably among Black Londoners during the pandemic, so that these groups have among the highest unemployment rates for both men and women in 2020.
