Ruth Moxon June 2023
This update shows provisional data on apprenticeships in London for the first two quarters of 2022/23 (August 2022 to January 2023). The information is based on data returned by providers in February 2023, offering an early insight into trends for the current academic year.
For a more comprehensive analysis and full-year data on apprenticeships, please see the Apprenticeship Update 2021/22.
To provide context, this update includes data from the same period (August to January) in previous academic years. As a result, the figures presented here differ from those found in full-year updates from GLA Economics.
In 2021/22, apprenticeship starts in London recovered from a low in 2019/20 but remained below pre-pandemic levels. Provisional data for the first two quarters of 2022/23 indicates a possible further decline in apprenticeship starts:
There was a 4.1% reduction in apprenticeship starts in both London and across England compared to the same period in 2021/22, with the number in London declining from 21,300 to 20,400. London had 200 fewer starts per 100,000 compared to the national average.
London continues to have the lowest rate of apprenticeship starts and achievement amongst all English regions.
The continued shift towards higher-level apprenticeships is evident, with 46% of the starts being higher-level apprenticeships, compared to only 16% at intermediate level.
The age profile of apprentices remains very similar to the same period in 2021/22.
The subject distribution of apprenticeships has also remained stable, with Business, Administration and Law and Health, Public Services, and Care-related subjects accounting for 58% of starts (59% in 2021/22).
