London Apprenticeships Mid-Year Update 2024/25

This update shows provisional data on apprenticeships in London for the first two quarters of 2024/25 (August 2024 to January 2025). The information is based on data returned by providers in February 2025, offering an early insight into trends for the current academic year.

To provide context, this update includes data from the same period (August to January) in previous academic years. As a result, the figures presented here differ from those found in full-year updates.

Summary of key points

In year provisional data shows that there were 21,900 apprenticeships starts for the first two quarters of 2024/25, this represents a marginal increase (1.5%) compared to the last period:

There was an small increase in apprenticeship starts in both London (1.5%) and across England (1.0%) compared to the same period in 2023/24, with the number in London rising from 21,600 to 21,900. London had 200 fewer starts per 100,000 compared to the national average.
London continues to have the lowest rate of apprenticeship starts and achievement amongst all English regions.
The number of higher-level (Level 4 or above) apprenticeships continues to rise, with 50% of the starts being higher-level apprenticeships in 2024/25, compared to 48% in 2023/24.
The age profile of apprentices remains similar to the same period in 2023/24, with small increases in the number of apprenticeships aged 25 and a fall in those under 19.
The subject distribution of apprenticeships has also remained stable, with Business, Administration and Law and Health, Public Services, and Care-related subjects continuing to account for 57% of starts.
