MSOA Atlas 2012

JANUARY 2012  Demographics

Average: 4.5 (6 votes)

This MSOA atlas provide a summary of demographic and related data for each Middle Super Output Area in Greater London. The average population of an MSOA in London in 2010 was 7,961, compared with 1,642 for an LSOA and 12,640 for a ward.

The profiles are designed to provide an overview of the population in these small areas by combining a range of data on the population, births, deaths, health, housing, crime, commercial property/floorspace, income, poverty, benefits, land use, environment, deprivation, schools, and employment.

This table shows some of the highlights of the data, and displays the areas that are ranked top and bottom for each one. For example:

* The MSOA with the lowest population (in Greenwich) also had the biggest fall in population since 2001.

* The MSOA with the lowest proportion of children aged 0 to 14 is in Camden

* The percentage of population aged 65+ ranges from 3.8% to 27.4%.

* There were 394 births in an MSOA in Hackney but only 28 in one in Havering.

* Average house prices vary from £137,000 in an MSOA in Barking and Dagenham to £1,995,000 to one in Wesminster.

* The biggest house price increase was in the same area in Westminster that had the highest average price.

* In an MSOA in Kensington and Chelsea, 70% of sold properties are bought for cash (without any mortgage).

* The highest net weekly household income is in an MSOA in Richmond.

* The biggest increase in people claiming Jobseekers Allowance was in an MSOA in Hackney (up 3.9 points), and the biggest reduction was in one in Greenwich (down 3.3 points).

* Every pupil living in an MSOA in Richmond-upon-Thames achieved at least 5 A*-C grades at GCSE including English and Maths. The lowest was an MSOA in Lewisham (30%).

If you need to find an MSOA and you know the postcode of the area, the ONS NESS search page has a tool for this.

The MSOA Atlas is presented using InstantAtlas mapping software. This is a useful tool for displaying a large amount of data for numerous geographies, in one place  (requires Adobe Flash Player).
